Such matters as the length of the Gospel and the brevity of 1 John (one sixth the length of the Gospel), the different nature of the writings—a Gospel and whatever 1 John is—provide a basis for explaining differences. It is also true that 1 John is closer to certain parts of the Gospel than others, especially to the Farewell Discourses. If the Gospel is the culmination of a lengthy process of composition, 1 John may well be closer to some later stage of its development.
